The Detroit Lions are the 5th oldest NFL franchise. The Portsmouth Spartans were founded in 1930 in Portsmouth, Ohio. 4 years later (1934) the Spartans were purchased by George A. Richards, a Detroit radio executive. The team was then moved to Detroit and renamed the Lions, not only as a nod to the city's already established baseball team, the Detroit Tigers, but also as a way to symbolize the "kings of the NFL". The Detroit Lions went on to win 4 NFL championships (1935, 1952, 1952 and 1957) before the superbowl era. After the start of the superbowl era, unfortunately, the lions became a team notable for losing, as they have yet to make a superbowl appearance and were the first NFL franchise to not win a single game in a full 16 game season.
Following many years of dissapointment, The Detroit Lions have become notorious in the 2020s for their resurgance under General Manager Brad Holmes and Head Coach Dan Campbell. The roster headed offensively by QB Jared Goff, WRs: Amon Ra St Brown and Jameson Williams, Rbs: David montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, and defensive players such as Aidan Hutchinson, Joseph Kerby and Brian Branch have all brought the Lions franchise back to form as they have had multiple playoff appearances and wins. The lions are heading into the 2025-26 season with two brand new assistant coaches (offensive and defensive coordinator) and are looking to keep the streak of playoff appearances alive in pursuit of a bigger goal which would be a Super Bowl victory.
